  • THE ART COLLECTION OF THE BIBLIOTHECA HERTZIANA

    The Bibliotheca Hertziana owns a collection of art objects and historical furniture, most of which were part of the furnishings of the Palazzo Zuccari when it became the property of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society (now the Max Planck Society) after the death of the institute's foundress Henriette Hertz in 1913.

  • THEATER IN SICILY

    Theater buildings occupy a special place in Sicily's rich cultural landscape. In cooperation with Bildarchiv Foto Marburg, two comprehensive photographic campaigns took place in 2019 documenting many of Sicily's theaters, both ancient and contemporary.

  • MASSIMO PIERSANTI AND THE ARCHIVIO INCONTRI INTERNAZIONALI D'ARTE

    Massimo Piersanti (Rome *1937) photographed the important exhibition of contemporary Italian art 'Vitalità del negativo nell'arte italiana 1960-70' in 1971 and was appointed official photographer of the Incontri Internazionali d'Arte, an association that provided space for all new forms of contemporary art and cultural production in Rome's Palazzo Taverna.

  • The ART COLLECTION OF THE CASA DI GOETHE

    Since 2017, the Photographic Collection has been photographing and cataloging the art collection of the Casa di Goethe in a long-term campaign. The Casa di Goethe in Rome is the only German museum abroad.

  • PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUMS

    The inventory of the Photo Collection includes numerous photographic albums of different genres from the 19th and 20th centuries. These include travel albums consisting partly of photographs taken by the collectors themselves and partly of photographs purchased in the travel destination.

  • GALLERIA NAZIONALE D’ARTE ANTICA

    The Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica is one of the largest and most important public collections in Rome. It holds works by important artists such as Bernini, Caravaggio, van Dyck, Holbein, Lippi, Lotto, Poussin, El Greco, Raphael, Tiepolo, Tintoretto, Rubens and Titian.

  • THE PHOTOGRAPHER CESARE D'ONOFRIO

    Cesare D'Onofrio (1921-2003) was a photographer and author. He wrote numerous publications on art and local history, which he published over the decades in his own publishing house "Romana Società Editrice", and which he sold, together with postcards and posters, in his small store in via Sant'Ignazio.

    Since 1956, the Italian and foreign cultural institutes united in the Unione Internazionale degli Istituti di Archeologia, Storia e Storia dell'Arte in Roma have financed the creation of their own photographic archive.

  • CORPUS GERNSHEIM

    The Corpus Photographicum of Drawings is one of the largest art-historical project-based collections of material and knowledge of the 20th century. Founded in 1937, the Corpus includes approximately 193,000 photographs of drawings from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, preserved in collections worldwide.

The Photographic Collection of the Bibliotheca Hertziana owns more than 1,300,000 photographic positives, negatives, transparencies, digital images and digital copies, most of which document Italian art from late antiquity to the present. In addition to the topography, architecture and art of Italy and in particular of the city of Rome, the artist and drawing sectors form further focal points of the collection.
